Robin van Persie has revealed he almost signed for Rangers before his move to Arsenal.

The Dutch striker, then aged only 20 and still playing for Feyenoord, was a target for Rangers boss Dick Advocaat and was keen to make the move to Ibrox.

He told BT Sport: “I was still playing for Feyenoord and I wanted to go [to Rangers]. I spoke to Dick Advocaat, who was the manager of Glasgow Rangers, and he was interested, I was interested.

“I was ready to go but they first needed to sell one player before they could buy me.

“I was actually ready to go there but I was still very young. I think I was about 19 or 20. But in the end I went to Arsenal.”

Van Persie says Advocaat never told him who the player he was unable to shift in order to sign him was.
