Arsenal have made steps forward in their efforts to land Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, according to reports.

The 23-year-old Dutch centre-back has been linked with a host of teams, including the Gunners, Southampton and Manchester City, in recent months.

Arsene Wenger’s side are in desperate need of a new centre-half and have reportedly stepped up to their efforts.

Italian news outlet Tuttomercatoweb claims that sources at the Wyscout Forum in London had indicated that Arsenal have made “a major step forward” in the race to sign Van Dijk.

The former Netherlands under-21 international has previously branded the Gunners “amazing”.

A fee of £8-10m has been mentioned in media reports, although Celtic have indicated that they value Van Dijk at more than that.
