Jermain Defoe has agreed an £80,000-a-week deal to return to the Premier League with Sunderland, according to reports.

The Toronto FC striker has finalised a three-and-a-half-year contract worth a total of £14m, claims The Sun.

Gus Poyet’s draw specialists are banking on the 32-year-old scoring the goals that will convert draws into wins and secure their Premier League safety. They are currently just a point outside the relegation zone.

Defoe, aged 32, has been keen to return to England after failing to settle in Major League Soccer. He was tipped to sign for QPR last summer but now appears to be set for the Stadium of Light in the coming days.

He could now make his debut on Saturday against old club Spurs, who the former England star has been training with in recent weeks to maintain his fitness.

Aston Villa, Hull, Leicester and QPR have been chasing Defoe, but he has opted for Sunderland in a deal that could see Jozy Altidore moving in the opposite direction.
