The 18-year-old, born in Germany but a USA Under-20 international, has joined the Scottish Championship side until January.
Zelalem, who signed for the Gunners in 2013, has two first team appearances – an FA Cup game against Coventry City and a Champions League clash with Turkish side Galatasaray – to his name to date.
He has been on the bench for Premier League matches but is yet to make his league debut.
His contract with the Gunners runs until 2017.
