Fabio Borini has said Brendan Rodgers treatment of him at Liverpool was soul destroying and forced him to move on to Sunderland.

The Italian forward had said he wanted to stay and fight for his place but found opportunities hard to come by despite the Reds struggles up-front last term.

He came close to a £14m move to Sunderland last summer after his successful loan spell there last term, while QPR also made a bid for his services.

Borini was made to train alone with Mario Balotelli and Jose Enrique as the writing on the wall became evident.

The Italian eventually joined the Black Cats in a £7.75m deal last week having appeared for just 200 minutes during the entirety of last season.

Borini had backed himself to make an impact at Anfield, but leaves with just eight starts and two Premier League goals for the Reds after signing from Roma for £10.5m in 2012.

“I wasted too much time – not because I wanted to waste it, or deserved to waste it, I just wasted it,” he was quoted by the Mail as saying.

“That’s why I came back to a place where I have been loved, and still feel the love from the supporters. It was really upsetting to train on my own.

“It was the killer that led me to leave Liverpool. I always gave everything for the club, and I showed that on the pitch and in training. Everyone knows within that club that I did everything and never complained.”
