David De Gea will still leave Manchester United at the end of the season, says Arsenal legend Ian Wright.

The Spain international, 24, put pen to paper on a new four-year deal after his failed move to Real Madrid and has since returned to the team.

De Gea is said to have put pen to paper because he feared being frozen out of Louis van Gaal’s plans until his previous deal expired at the end of the season.

Being axed for the entire 2015/16 campaign would have ruined his hopes of being Spain’s first-choice keeper at Euro 2016 in France next summer.

He has also been said to have insisted on a release fee of around £25m in his new deal that would take away the haggling over how much the transfer will cost with Real knowing if they stump up the cash then he will be their player.

And Wright thinks that just because he signed his new deal doesn’t mean he will remain beyond this season.

“David De Gea deserves a massive pat on the back how he has handled himself following his aborted move back to Spain,” Wright wrote in The Sun.

“The keeper made a string of super saves to deny Southampton a late leveller. De Gea was axed because Van Gaal feared the row over his transfer would affect performances.

“But I disagree, De Gea could have played in every United match and he would have shown complete professionalism.

“Sergio Romero let in a couple of goals I am convinced De Gea would have saved.

“But everything is back to normal now and De Gea has signed a new contract — although I still think he could move at the end of this season.”
