Ashley Young played at left-back against the Tractor Boys. Van Gaal will be forced to either persevere with that plan or switch Matteo Darmian to the left flank and bring Antonio Valencia in at right-back.
The United boss also gave an update on Shaw’s fitness, though the England international will not be entering his team selection plans for at least six months.
Van Gaal told MUTV he had spoken to Shaw last night.
He said: “He was very positive, which is amazing for me. It’s a very good signal.
“We have started the rehabilitation. He shall be visited at home for the first electro muscle stimulants.”
