John O’Shea captains Sunderland against former side Manchester United.
He is partnered in defence by Younes Kaboul, who returns from his suspension.
Kaboul’s return is one of four changes, with goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, right-back Billy Jones and midfielder Lee Cattermole also coming into the side.
Fabio Borini is preferred to Jermain Defoe in attack.
