Sunderlanad manager Dick Advocaat has explained how he and Manchester United counterpart Louis van Gaal came to pose with body-painted nude models.

Speaking ahead of the the compatriots and old rivals renewing acquaintances in the Premier League today, Advocaat was reminded above a controversial marketing shoot the pair once starred in.

Advocaat, then in charge of PSV Eindhoven, posed alongside then Ajax boss Van Gaal. Both men were accompanied by topless models who had been painted in the kits of their respective clubs.

The Black Cats boss said he and Van Gaal had not been involved in the painting process.

He told the Mirror: “It was PSV v Ajax, I believe. We were quite surprised when we came in. I can remember it – don’t put that in the newspaper! I know where you live.

“They were already painted, unfortunately.

“We did so many things – I don’t know why, what reason — [and] that was one of them.”
