New Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce is considering a move to sign long-term ally Kevin Nolan, according to the Telegraph.

Nolan has followed Allardyce to most clubs where he has been manager, including the Black Cats’ fierce local rivals Newcastle United.

The 33-year-old is a free agent after recently leaving West Ham United by mutual consent. Allardyce had signed him from the Magpies and made him his captain during his time in charge at Upton Park.

Nolan also played for Allardyce at Bolton Wanderers, where he came through the ranks and broke into the first-team under the newly appointed Sunderland boss.

Indeed, Blackburn Rovers is the only club Allardyce has managed during Nolan’s professional career where he hasn’t signed the midfielder.

Nolan has been training with Leyton Orient in recent weeks in order to stay fit.

While his relationship with the Sunderland could be described as frosty as best, the Wearside support have welcomed ex-Magpies Lee Clark, Michael Chopra, Steven Caldwell and Titus Bramble to the club in recent memory.
