Chris Smalling has revealed that Luke Shaw handled his double leg break well following Manchester United’s loss to PSV.

Shaw was taken off the pitch in tears on a stretcher during the Champions League clash back in September and faces a lengthy injury layoff that will see him out of action for most of the season.

Even if he recovers quickly it remains a distant possibility that he would be able to get back in the United side and build up enough game time to play in the Euros.

The England defender underwent surgery twice on his leg following the injury caused by Hector Moreno, who visited the former Saints player in hospital after saying he meant no malice.

And Smalling has revealed that despite the massive blow Shaw remained in good spirits.

“Soon after it he was in good spirits,” Smalling told United Review. “Obviously it is very hard for him but he likes to be in amongst the lads because he has got some progress going.

“He is in the pool, he on the bike and he is in the gym. He’s on the right road and he’s a happy soul, which is good to see.”

United play PSV at Old Trafford tonight as the teams face each other for the first time since Shaw’s injury.
