Aston Villa are hoping to sign Manchester United great Nemanja Vidic on a free transfer, according to The Sun.

The Serbian defender recently had his contract terminated by Italian side Inter Milan, where he had been plagued by injury and fallen out out of manager Roberto Mancini’s plans.

With his deal torn up six months early, the 35-year-old was thought to be on his way to Major League Soccer. But Villa are reportedly plotting to bring him back to the Premier League.

Manager Remi Garde is said to be keen to toughen up his backline – and defenders don’t come much tougher than Vidic.

A short-term contract until the end of the season would allow Garde to strengthen in that department without the need for any major investment from owner Randy Lerner.

Vidic left United to join Inter on a free transfer in 2014. He had made more than 200 Premier League appearances during his eight-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.
