The jersey number matches the Ivory Coast international’s current age. The 28-year-old has joined on loan from Serie A side Roma for the remainder of the season.
With his UK visa having been processed in time, Doumbia is in the Magpies’ squad for this evening’s game at Everton and has arrived at Goodison Park.
Previous wearers of Newcastle’s number 28 shirt include Sammy Ameobi, who vacated the jersey last summer, Tamas Kadar, Michael Chopra, Paul Robinson, Aaron Hughes and Paul Kitson.
