Will Keane in Man Utd squad to play Sunderland

Manchester United striker Will Keane is in the club’s squad for this weekend’s Premier League game against Sunderland, manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed.

The 23-year-old’s call-up is reward for his five-goal haul in the under-21 game against Norwich City earlier this week.

Keane also played in the under-21 game against Manchester City last night, when he turned provider to create the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win.

The young forward has been on loan at Preston North End earlier this season. Van Gaal says he was brought back to Old Trafford in order to push for a first team place.

He told United’s in-house media team: “Yes, that’s the reason we called him back [from a loan spell at Preston North End].

“He’s always training with us, with the first selection, and he’s scoring a lot of goals now. He is also in the squad tomorrow and I hope that he shall continue with scoring goals because that is very important for a striker.”

Keane was on the bench for the recent FA Cup third round victory over Sheffield United at Old Trafford, but he only has one senior appearance for United to date.

That was when he came on as as substitute to make his debut in a home defeat to Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Eve 2011.
