Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez will hold talks with the Newcastle United board this afternoon with a view to becoming their new manager, according to Sky Sports.

That development came hot on the heels of Steve McClaren’s sacking this morning.

Benitez was already the hot favourite to replace McClaren in the event that he lost his job, so news that talks are taking place do not come as a great surprise. The relegation-threatened Magpies are set to make an appointment before Monday’s clash with Leicester City.

The 55-year-old Spaniard has been out of work since being sacked by Real Madrid in January. He had only been in charge at the Bernabeu since last summer.

He made his named during his time in charge of Valencia between 2001 and 2004. He then took charge of Liverpool from 2004 to 2010 and led them to Champions League glory in that time.

Benitez has also managed Inter Milan, Chelsea and Napoli since leaving Anfield.
