Ferguson famously tried to sign the then England star from Blackburn Rovers in 1996, but was turned down by Shearer in favour of a move to his boyhood club.

When the two met in the USA, Shearer happened to be wearing a red polo shirt.

He joked: “He FINALLY managed to get me in a red shirt!!”
