Newcastle United were the butt of a joke by fans of French side Bordeaux during their win over Lorient yesterday.

The Magpies have built a reputation for raiding Ligue 1 for bargain signings in a transfer policy that, given they are on the verge of relegation, can be regarded as, at best, hit-and-miss.

Bordeaux supporters took the opportunity to issue a reminder to any of their players thinking of following in the footsteps Henri Saivet, who left their club to join Newcastle in January and has made just two starts since.

They unfurled banners reading: “For those who are dreaming about moving to England, there is still room on Newcastle United’s bench!”
