Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a deal to sign Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko, but Chelsea could yet hijack the deal.

The 27-year-old is currently away from Tyneside on international duty, but France’s official Twitter account posted to confirm that he had left their training camp to finalise a transfer.

He left Clairefontaine at 8am BST with the permission of coach Didier Deschamps.

It was widely assumed that he would be heading to Spurs, who have been most strongly linked with him in recent days, but French newspaper L’Equipe reckons he is in talks with Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.

Sissoko has made no secret of his desire to leave St James’ Park since their relegation last season, but the Championship side are holding firm over their £30m valuation of the player.

That is considerably more than the £16m bid reportedly tabled by the north London side.

Sissoko joined the Magpies from Toulouse in January 2013 and has made 133 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 12 goals.
