Sissoko, who had made no secret of his desire to leave the relegated Magpies, looked set to join Everton after the Toffees bid £30m for his services. But Ronald Koeman’s side were unable to agree personal terms with the powerful former Toulouse man.

That allowed Spurs to sneak in and tie Sissoko down to a five-year contract that will keep him in north London until June 2021.

Sissoko joined Newcastle from Toulouse in January 2013 and scored 12 times in 133 appearances for the Magpies.

He was part of the France side that reached the final of Euro 2016 on homesoil earlier this summer. He forced his way into Didier Deschamps’ starting lineup with some impressive displays during the tournament.
