Manchester United are targeting a move for Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins, according to Portuguese newspaper Record.
Martins, aged 21, has reportedly caught United’s eye in recent weeks. The article suggests that one of Jose Mourinho’s scout was due at this evening’s game between Sporting and Legia Warsaw in the Champions League. The youngster started the match.
But United reportedly face competition from Spanish giant Real Madrid, who are also keen on the Portugal Under-21 and Under-23 international.
They saw the Cape Verde-born starlet at close quarters during the recent Champions League game between the two sides.
Martins enjoyed a breakthrough season in Sporting’s first-team last season. He has started the new campaign with two goals in six league games.
The Red Devils have form when it comes to snapping up young wingers from Sporting. A certain Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani have previously made the switch from the Estadio Jose Alvalade to Old Trafford.
