The Belgium international’s knee clashed with team-mate Emre Can’s during training at Melwood last wek. The German midfielder was absent for the draw against West Ham United last weekend and is now a doubt for the trip to the Riverside Stadium.

Can’s injury was confirmed by manager Jurgen Klopp in his pre-match press conference at Melwood earlier today. He also confirmed that it had been inadvertently inflicted by Origi in what he described as a “knee-on-knee” challenge and that Can has sustained slight ligament damage.

Origi did not suffer any effects from the collision. He played, and indeed scored, against the Hammers.

Can, aged 22, faces a struggle to face Boro in the midweek clash, but Klopp offered reassurances that he would be fit to face Everton in the Merseyside derby next Monday evening.
