The German boss was forthright in his defence of his compatriot in his pre-match press conference, questioning the punditry credentials of former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, who had criticised Karius.

But Klopp has taken him out of the firing line. He said Karius was a better keeper than he had shown against West Ham last time out and he did not want to “push” him through the current situation.
