Every two years we all hold wild aspirations of taking in every tournament game physically possible.

If you have achieved the feat yourself this summer, chances are you have balanced your Euro 2012 binges with a decent amount of shut-eye.

It was reported this weekend that one football fan failed to make that crucial precaution, taking in 2000 minutes of the European Championships without a wink of sleep in between. That decision ultimately resulted in Jiang Xiaoshan’s sleep-deprived body giving up on him.

According to reports from China, the man was found dead after replacing 11 nights of sleep with back-to-back live Euro 2012 group stage matches.

With the games kicking off at 2.45 a.m. local time and Jiang also going to work in the day, a ticking time bomb was silently edging towards disaster for the England supporting fan.

One pal told a regional newspaper about his and Jiang’s football watching marathons. The friend said: “We would rest occasionally but he watched everyday and would not miss a single match.”

Doctor Liu Zhilling from Jiang’s home province helped shine further light on what went so badly wrong by providing this illuminating quote: “If you use beer to replace water, that is not good.”

The 26-year-old was found dead by his mother after Italy’s 2-0 victory over Ireland on June 18, quite possibly indicating that Mario Balotelli’s sumptuous volley was the very last thing Jiang saw.
