It was little wonder that Bruno Alves missed his penalty during last night’s semi-final shootout against Spain. The Zenit St Petersburg defender couldn’t even hold his nerves sufficiently to count to five, never mind fire the ball past Iker Casillas.

Alves had been told to take the fourth Portugal penalty. But he strode up to take the third one.

The designated third penalty taker, Manchester United star Nani, raced after him and sent him back to halfway line.

Nani duly put his spot-kick away, but when Alves made the long walk a second time, he smashed the ball against the bar.

It makes you wonder whether they might have been better just letting him get on with it when he was there the first time.
