Historical Moments

1890: As the season began Professional Baseball was in a state of flux, with many star players departing their teams and starting their own league, in the first attempted at a unionized job action. Teams from the American Association were joining the National League, as other teams folded or decided to play minor league baseball due to the costs of the top professional level. Looking to keep their league going the AA, after losing three teams invited three teams from the International Association to join the league. The Rochester Broncos were one of those teams. The Broncos managed by Pat Powers played their games at Culver Field, played a competitive brand of baseball all season as they finished in fifth place with a record of 63-63. Sandy Griffin was the team’s leading hitter with a .307 average. Griffin was one of two Broncos with five home runs, a number matched by Jimmy Knowles who led the team with 84 RBI. Bob Barr was the team’s top pitcher with 28 wins, posting an ERA of 3.25. One late season highlight came on September 15th, when Ledell Titcomb threw a No Hitter against the Syracuse Stars. Following the season, the AA decided it was too costly to keep the little three teams, and the Rochester franchise went back to playing minor league baseball this time in the Eastern Association.
